In general term for computer, workstation is specific reasons related to LAN. A workstation is a microcomputer high-end application designed for technical or scientific. Primarily intended to be used by one person at a time, they are usually connected to a LAN and run multiple operating systems to the user.

But these days the line between workstations and PCs is becoming increasingly blurred as the demand for fast computers, networks and graphics have become commonplace in the consumer world, allowing manufacturers of workstations to use “off the shelf” PC components and graphics solutions as opposed to property developed in-house technology. This allows software development to take place at low cost (relative to server) desktop machines.

There have been several attempts to produce a job as a machine specifically for the lowest point possible price versus performance.
